My wife and I had planned to watch It’s a Wonderful Life last night, as we do every year. It’s our Christmas (Eve) tradition. Then we both realized that neither of us really felt like it. I started to consider that I can let go of the old Christmas, and enjoy the new.
That’s what made the day so exciting the first few times around—the bundle of surprise and mystery and knowing that something is happening but not exactly what. Getting hung up on following the letter of traditions or expecting that all of it look and feel a certain way can actually suck the life out. Christmas won’t ever be what it was, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be really special as it is.
There’s something to be said for giving Christmas room to breathe. Let the experience flow, and have some faith that magic comes again. Free Christmas!
